Many of the storage enquiries we receive from Gympie come from people who are in the middle of moving house.
Most of them did not plan to need storage; something slipped. This is a guide to the situations that create the need, what each one actually costs you, and the cheapest way through it.
The four situations that catch people out
#1: Settlement dates that do not line up
There are two products on offer. A self-storage unit is a room in a facility, usually in Noosaville or on the Rene Street industrial estate. You rent the room and you bring your things to it.
Mobile storage is a sealed unit delivered to your home; you load it there and the operator takes it away to a depot. Stash + Lode is a mobile storage operator based in Cooroy, so we have a view on this, but the numbers below are meant to be fair to both.
#2: The new house is smaller
Downsizing from acreage to a house in town is common in Gympie. The furniture that fitted the big shed and the verandah does not fit a suburban block. Rather than sell in a hurry, most people store the overflow for a few months and decide later what to keep.
#3: Renovating before you move in
Floors, paint and kitchens are far easier with an empty house. If you move in first, everything gets moved twice inside the house.
A unit in the driveway for the renovation, then unloaded straight into the finished rooms, is cleaner and often cheaper than the extra labour. You can keep the unit on your driveway for the whole job at the same rate as depot storage, so nothing leaves the property.
#4: Selling and styling
Agents will tell you a half-empty house sells faster. The bookshelves, the second lounge and the kids’ clutter go into a unit for the campaign and come back after settlement.
What each option costs
Rough 2026 figures for a three-bedroom home in Gympie:
- A second removalist trip (to and from a shed): $436
- Self-storage shed in Gympie: $240 to $453 per month plus the two trips.
- Mobile storage: from $165 a month including GST per unit per month, plus delivery and collection; a three-bedroom home is usually two units.
The move and the storage as one job
Stash + Lode and Gympie Removals are the same group. That matters for one reason: when the move and the storage are booked together, the crew that packs the truck can load the storage unit in the same visit, and the unit can be delivered to the new house on the day the truck arrives.
One booking, one crew, no gap.
A short checklist for a Gympie move
- Confirm the settlement dates in writing and count the days between them.
- Walk the new house with a tape measure before you move. Decide what will not fit.
- Book the removalist and any storage at least two weeks out; end-of-month and school holidays fill first.
- Pack by room and label both ends of the box. Anything going into storage gets a coloured sticker so it is loaded last and stored together.
- Keep one box of essentials (kettle, chargers, sheets, tools) in your car, not on the truck.
- Photograph the meters and the condition of both houses on the day.
When you do not need storage
If settlement lines up, the new house is the same size or bigger, and it is ready to live in, you do not need storage and nobody should sell it to you. Book the move and be done. Storage is for gaps, overflow and empty-house jobs, and it is at its cheapest when it is booked for the time you actually need and not a week longer.
